Shaking vs Stirring

Why do you shake some cocktails, but stir others? In this video, I discuss the science of ice and dilution, and how that determines whether to shake or stir. 



Shaking

Equipment

  1. Cocktail set (includes Boston shaker, jigger, bar spoon, hawthorne strainer, muddler)
  2. Angled measuring jigger 
  3. Citrus juice squeezer

Technique

  1. Pour cocktail liquid into shaker glass
  2. Add ice to the shaker tin
  3. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds
  4. Double strain into glass

Stirring

Equipment

  1. Cocktail set (includes Boston shaker, bar spoon, hawthorne strainer, and muddler)
  2. Angled measuring jigger 
  3. Fancy mixing glass
  4. Julep strainer
  5. 1 inch ice cubes

Technique

  1. Pour cocktail liquid into mixing glass
  2. Add medium size ice to the mixing glass
  3. Stir fast for 45 seconds
  4. Use julep strainer to strain into glass
